Farmers Feeding the Flock: Growing Hope, One Acre at a Time
At Greensburg Community Bread of Life, we believe a harvest can nourish more than just the body—it can feed the spirit and build a stronger community. That’s why we’re proud to partner with local farmers and supporters through Farmers Feeding the Flock (FFF), an initiative that transforms fields into meals for neighbors in need.
How It Works:
✅ A local farmer donates acreage for planting.
✅ Local agricultural businesses and supporters contribute in-kind gifts and donations to help cover the costs of soil preparation, planting, fertilization, and harvest.
✅ After the growing season, the crops are harvested and sold.
✅ Every net dollar from the harvest goes directly to Bread of Life to fund meals and operations at our soup kitchen.

Thanks to this incredible partnership, Farmers Feeding the Flock has helped support vital services like:
-
Serving 2,500 meals a month to those facing food insecurity
-
Rescuing 3 million pounds of food (as of April 2025) from landfills to feed hungry neighbors
-
Providing operational funding that keeps our doors open to everyone in need
This year, we’re honored to partner with the Smiley Family Farm to plant 30 acres of soybeans—continuing the mission and legacy of this meaningful fundraiser.
Every donation makes a difference. Whether you’re sponsoring an acre, providing an in-kind gift, or making a financial contribution, your support helps us continue “faithfully serving together to meet our neighbors’ needs.”

2025 Farmers Feeding the Flock Field Announced
We are excited to announce that our annual Farmers Feeding the Flock fundraiser is getting underway! We are partnering with local Smiley Farms, which will be providing the 30-acre field for the eighth year of this event. Jim Stewart will be overseeing this year’s steering committee, contributing his expertise and knowledge to make this year’s event a huge success.
The Farmers Feeding the Flock project has three main objectives:
-
To partner with local farmers to raise funds for the services offered by the Greensburg Community Bread of Life.
-
To promote Decatur County agriculture, as agriculture is a crucial part of our community.
-
To utilize our partnership with Smiley Farms to educate the community about the costs and risks associated with farming, the environmental benefits of responsible farming practices, and the harvest process.

Smiley Farms, this year’s field donors, are well known for their long-standing commitment to bettering their community. The Smiley family has increased their energy savings, efficiency, and safety of operations over recent years. Committed to education, safety, and environmentally efficient practices, the Smiley Family has been an important & impactful part of Decatur County since 1955. We are proud to partner with them for this year’s Farmers Feeding the Flock event and are thankful for their outstanding support shown by their field donation.
All funds raised by the Farmers Feeding the Flock event will go towards funding our endeavors to continue offering services to our neighbors in need. As shared by Bread of Life staff, “We are excited for this year’s Farmers Feeding the Flock event, and to continue serving our community. It is the dedication of our volunteers, community partners, and generous supporters that makes our work possible.”
Farmers Feeding the Flock updates will be provided regularly through our website, local media, and social media outlets. The process will allow for learning about farming in Decatur County, the Smiley Farm field’s progress, and will serve as a reminder that local farms play a huge role in our local economy. Supporters are encouraged to keep an eye open for signs at Smiley Farms, located at Hwy 46 and County Road 600 West, and watch this year’s field growth.
